For a little fun in the sun, Barbados is a fabulous spot for a destination wedding honeymoon – particularly for couples on the East Coast. The Caribbean is close enough for most couples, but far enough to feel like you’re really getting away. Barbados often gets over looked for places like the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, which are all fabulous, but Barbados is really fantastic. You may recall that Tiger Woods actually got married in Barbados – not too shabby. And we all know Rhianna.
Barbados is a small island located in the far southeastern part of the Caribbean. It may be one of the further east of all the Caribbean islands, but well worth the trip. The western part of the island is the most built up of the island and lots of hotels are located there, as well as your touristy shopping places. My suggestion, however, is to stay over on the eastern side in the St. Philip area. Crane Beach as been consistently rated one of the top 10 beaches in the world and it’s gorgeous, and often empty, so it’s a great place to get some sun and not be bothered by large crowds. There’s a fantastic hotel located right on the cliff of Crane Beach, simply called The Crane. The Crane offers traditional hotel rooms in an old-world looking building, but rooms are beautifully done. In the other part of the property are The Residences that are available to guests looking for a little more room, a little more pizzazz and a little more privacy. The Residences offer one and two bedroom suites, which are really more like condos. Each offers a huge bedroom, living room, a small, full kitchen, and best of all, an ocean-facing patio with private plunge pools. The Crane also offers really breathtaking views overlooking Crane Beach for a wedding ceremony and the restaurants are delish for receptions. Check it out!

One of our favorite things to do on vacation is to just go exploring. So we rented a car and drove around the island. The “maps” are definitely interesting, and we did manage to get lost among fields of sugar cane, but it was perhaps the best time my husband and I had on our vacation (and our first real test of traveling together as a dating couple). The people are so nice and we’ll never forget it. If you’re looking for a really relaxing beach honeymoon, Barbados will not let you down.
A few facts to know before planning your destination wedding or honeymoon in Barbados:
- It’s pretty easy to get married here, as there are no requirements as to the number of days you must arrive before the wedding as a “residency” requirement. Just show up and get married, essentially. J
- Both people must head to the Ministry of Home Affairs to apply for the marriage license
- Fees for the license are Bds$150.00 [about $75 US] in cash and a Bbs$25.00 [$12 US] stamp. If you’re getting married on the beach, you’ll also be required to pay Bds$350.00 [$178 US].
- In traditional Bajan weddings, steel drums are the band of choice, so if you’re feeling festive, you might want to check this out!
