Last year while the New England air was turning a little cooler, my brother got married in Playa del Carmen, in November – which was great. Who doesn’t love a little sun? But even though it was November, it could have been a disaster had a hurricane decided to roll through in the last few days of the season. Lucky for us the formula worked: all-inclusive resort + no hurricane + sun = a sweet time!

We lucked out, but here at Fresh LiME Events we strongly suggest when deciding on a date for your destination wedding – wherever it may be – that you really research the weather. A wedding in September might be ok in Tuscany, but not so much, say, in the Virgin Islands. Hurricanes are not welcome at your reception!

Here’s a quick look at when major weather events tend to happen around the world:

  • Planning an intimate gather in the South Pacific? You might want to avoid March, April and May. It’s tsunami season.
  • Florida, the Caribbean and Mexico are hurricane prone from June-November – although my own perception is that they tend to happen later in the season than earlier.
  • As a former resident of Bangkok, Thailand, I can attest rainy season runs May/June – Oct/November. [Think of Florida rainy season: gorgeous hot days, with a torrential downpour for an hour or two – and yes, streets flood up past your ankles – and then clears to sun]
  • Italy is a fantastic place to get married, but I wouldn’t recommend Venice in November. The canals are prone to flooding. Ick.

You can have a wedding anywhere in the world, but be sure to work with your wedding planner to pick a date that won’t leave you wet, or stranded.

Cheers!
