When I was at university, I spent a semester living abroad with a German host family while I studied in Heidelberg, Germany. A decade later (gulp) I’m back in Germany and loving every minute of it. Germany has a special place in my heart, and specifically Heidelberg does. The city is one of the oldest university towns in the country [University of Heidelberg is renowned], yet HD, as the locals call it, manages to be super quaint and inviting.
The Heidelberg Castle, or Heidelberger Schloss as you’ll hear it called, is the most recognizable sights in town. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle sits up on a hill overlooking Old Town Heidelberg and the Neckar River. The views are spectacular and the castle amazing. The best part about the castle is that you can rent it out and host your event there! When I was studying in Heidelberg, our annual Christmas Ball was at the castle. If you’re a bride looking to marry in Europe or Germany, but want something other than Paris, think about Heidelberg. When you rent the castle, it’s yours, so you’re not competing with the public or other events. The vibe and decor inside the castle require little additions, and you can choose to have your event inside or out in one of the courtyards.
If you marry or visit during the Holiday Season, you must visit the Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market). It’s great. See our post tomorrow on the famous Weihnachtsmarkt!
